If this is your first time in New York, you've got to see the Statue of Liberty. This famous monument can be seen either from the Staten Island Ferry or you can purchase tickets to ferry over to the Statue of Liberty Island at Battery Park.

Very historic and awesome to see Lady Liberty first hand, but also a little over rated, not much to do besides gawk and take pictures once you are on Liberty Island. You have to budget about 3-4 hours for this excursion, about one 1 to 1 1/2 hours to buy tickets and wait in line for the ferry to the island, then about another hour for a ferry off!
