Description
Lots of eating out this weekend. We're going to hit up a few of the popular East Bay establishments and watch Wall-E this weekend.

Day 1 - Friday July 18, 2008

Lunch at the House

We decided to take a team lunch to the House, one of Steve's favorite places.  Good thing we made reservations because it was pretty packed.  Great food overall.  For the appetizer we ordered the calamari (pretty standard) and the deep-fried salmon roll with chinese hot mustard, which is a must for anyone who likes salmon and fried food.  For my main dish, I had the Angus flatiron steak with roasted shitake mushroom sauce and it came with some amazing mashed potatoes as well.  Definitely worth the $15 that we paid for it.

Another popular selection was the grilled sea bass with garlic ginger soy.  Delicious.  It was a bit pricier at $20 but also came with a side of garlic noodles.  I'd highly recommend both of these entrees for anyone choosing to go here for lunch.  Definitely filling.  But, we really couldn't help ourselves.  The dessert menu also seemed so appetizing.  So, we went ahead and ordered the truffle chocolate cake, passion fruit creme brulee, mango tapioca, apple pie, and the dessert special which was ice cream with peaches that had been soaked in riesling.  The desserts were amazing.  Everyone chose their favorie two and mine were the creme brulee and the mango tapioca.

Golden Gate Bakery on Vacation

Fans of their delicious dan ta (egg custard) will be disappointed to know that they are currently on vacation.  I guess they make so much the rest of the year that they can take a nice long vacation.  Good for them.  Bad for us.

Sushi, sashimi, and more

We were in the mood for some sushi.  So, we decided to try out a new Japanese restaurant in Emeryville called Miyozen.  New to us, but not to a lot of other folks.  It's actually been around for about 2 years now but we've never had a chance to try it out.  Good thing we did becsause it was definitely worth the visit.  Reminded us of what Sushi House used to be - good and inventive rolls, decent quality sashimi, pretty good prices.  We ended up paying $30 a person after ordering 9 rolls for 4 people.  Not too shabby at all.  They also have an all-you-can eat option on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.  So, we'll probably be coming back to see how that is as well.

Day 2 - Saturday July 19, 2008

Vietnamese Sandwiches

If you live in the East Bay and love Vietnamese sandwiches there are two phenomenal places on San Pablo Avenue.  One is really close to where I live and it's called Banh Mi Ba Le Sandwich Deli.  If you blink, you'll miss this tiny little deli within a pretty standard plaza.  There's not much here and not much to look at but don't worry.  Try their $2.50 Vietnamese sandwiches and you'll quickly see why this place is so popular.  They have one table outside and one inside so this isn't a sit-down restaurant by any stretch of the imagination.  But, you can eat here if you wish (they also have pho and a few other dishes).  But, the main reason people come here is for the Vietnamese sandwiches.  When warm, these are some of the most delicious I've ever had.  Very authentic.  I'd highly recommend it if you're looking for some authentic Vietnamese sandwiches for a really really good price.  My favorite is their cha-siu (red BBQ, sweet pork).  But, the combo and BBQ chicken are also quite popular as well.  Just beware - they're not really opened all that long, so check the hours and call before you go.  I think they close at 6pm daily and are closed on Sundays.

The other amazing Vietnamese sandwich place is Huong Tra.  Their sandwiches aren't as authentic as Banh Mi Ba Le, but they are phenomenal.  The beef sandwiches is in a nicely toasted bun that is slightly crunchy on the outside and nice and fluffy on the inside.  All the goodies are there - cilantro, carrots, mayo, peppers, etc.  But what really makes their sandwiches stand out is the meat.  It just works.  It's a bit of a drive (Richmond), but the sandwiches are definitely worth the trek out here.  And, it is a restaurant so you can sit down and enjoy your meal.  All your favorites are here too.  So, you can grab some pho, rice, or other Vietnamese dish with your sandwich.

Good Shabu Shabu at Zabu Zabu

Zabu zabu raised their prices to $25 per person and they now have all you can eat sushi rolls.  The service also got a lot better.  Not sure if we were just close to the owners or what, but I felt like they were a lot more attentive this time.

Day 3 - Sunday July 20, 2008

Dim Sum

Asian pearl in the 99 ranch plaza in Albany is incredibly packed. Got here at 10:50 am and there was already a line here. Wow. Wonder if the food will be that good.

I can see why there's a line now...

Now that we've had the food here, I can see why there's such a long line to get in.  The food is good.  The service is good.  The wait... still sucks (even though we got there at 10:50am).  But, part of it is just because people like to relax and eat slower when eating a dim sum meal.  Part of that is because they tend to be so popular that they run out of stuff (causes people to stick around longer to get the items that they want).  But, wow.  I'm impressed.  It's as good a dim sum place as I've ever had and our meal came out to about $30 for two people. I can't remember the name of every dish, but I can say a few things about the items I normally order.

Shu Mai - gotta get this at every dim sum place.  Doesn't disappoint.  Plenty of shrimp in here.

Small pork chops - delicious.  Haven't had it in awhile.  Again, fairly standard.

Ham say gow - These are the warm, slightly crispy items that are mainly made of a chewy, gooey dough and filled with stuff inside.  Normally it's pork inside.  The ones they had had pork and some shrimp essence which overpowered the pork.  And, they were missing cilantro which was quite sad.  But, you'll notice that the items were lightly crisped and the oil they used must have been pretty fresh because the dough was still nice and white.  Big plus there.

Sesame balls - lightly fried balls filled with lotus seed or red bean paste and completed covered in sesame seeds.  These were by far the best I've had anywhere.  And, again, notice that it's completely white meaning that the oil they used was fresh.  Very impressed.

Egg tarts - these were just ok.  The skin was nice and crispy but there waas too much of it.  Takes away from the egg tart inside.  Cindy countered that it was a bit too sweet.  I didn't think the inside was too sweet but I do think that it was too small.  =)

There were a few other dishes that we tried out but I didn't really know the names of.  And, I wanted some pork buns but was told that it would be 15 minutes before they had more.  So, we didn't wait for that either.  We'll definitely be coming back here though.
