Day 1 - Thursday December 18, 2008

Bar hopping in San Francisco

My friend Jason's coming up for the weekend.  So, I wanted to take him around some of the happy hour places in the financial district.  There are definitely more than enough drink and food specials to keep us busy.

Bar hopping in the financial district

email

First stop - the ferry building.  There's so much to do here.  And, it's a great place to walk around and great some good food.

email

And, of course, hog island oyster company is located here.  They have some amazing drink and food specials.

email

The good part about sitting outside...  the view.  The bad part...  it's COLD.  We opted to sit outside and be a bit more touristy.

email

We got here really early. Happy hour is between 5-7pm, but generally it gets packed right at 5:00pm.  So, if you can get here a bit earlier, you'll be able to snag a seat.  otherwise, you can always stand around.  During cold days (like today) you could also find some seats outside.  Most people don't want to sit outside though.

30 min to happy hour.  Were sitting outside because Jason doesn't think it is cold. WTF

I decided to order something while we wait.  Razor clams with Fresno chili and fennel relish.  They were absolutely AMAZING.  For $6 ($3 per clam) they were a tad bit expensive.  But, very very very good.

email

We're waiting for the clock to strike 5pm and order some of those happy hour specials.  Why?  $1 oysters is a major draw.  $3.50 pints of beer isn't bad too.  Perhaps we'll try a few other items on that list as well.  Jason orders a Champagne - guinot cremant de limoux brut, France.  Primarily because it's the cheapest champagne on the menu.  And, because it's from France.

email

I had no idea what a night smelt was... so we ordered it.  Basically they're small fried fish that are similar to sardines.  They were very good and went great with the beers.

email

We ordered a dozen of the $1 oysters.  They were delicious.  Normal price was around $27 for a dozen.  What a bargain.

email

Next stop on our bar hopping tour...  the cosmopolitan Cafe, a popular hang out for many of the folks in the area.

email

Happy hour is from 3:30pm-7:00pm here.  Specials are not $5...  $6 for some, $4 for some...  The website lied.  We decided to order a few appetizers and some martinis.

email

Margaritas - $6 each.
Crisp duck spring rolls Thai chili lime dipping sauce - $6
Grilled chicken date - $6
Pizza of the day - $8.50

email

Another shot of the sign at Cosmo cafe as we anxiously waited for our appetizers.

The crispy duck spring rolls were amazing.  But, $6 for 4 of them?  $1.25 per piece?  Not much of a happy hour special if you ask me.  We gobbled them down pretty quickly.
