Day 1 - Sunday May 18, 2008

Soup Dumplings - Joe's Shanghai

One of the best, if not the most famous "soup dumplings" in New York City. Don't over order (I have that tendency..), their soup dumplings are surprisingly heavy. Expect to wait for your table, we went around 2 PM on Sunday afternoon and still had to wait 20 to 30 mins. The orginal pork soup dumplings are still the best. Joe's Shanghai is not comparable to Taiwan's "Ding Tai Fung" (in case you wanted to know), but I'm not complaining! Still worth a try.

Chinatown

Joe's Shanghai is located in NYC's Chinatown.  If you had lunch there like me, it's a good idea to head over to Soho for afternoon shopping and to walk off some calories.  Soho is a 20 min. walk from Chinatown.  On your way there you'll pass by hundreds of little stores that basically sell the same merchandize.  Ignore the knock-off bags (yes, people can tell them apart, don't embarrass yourself), and maybe pick out some cute suvenirs, t-shirts or skirts.  On this trip I found some cute ethnic scarves that cost $7.00 each.  The label will display "D&G", made from a blend of pashmina and silk, yadda, yadda.  You know that's not true, so I asked the lady selling the scarves. "Cotton", she said, pretty comfy cotton in my opinion.  I ended up buyng the scarf in 3 colors.  My dearest, copy cat mother with the larger bank account bought 6.

The first thing I did before I wore the scarf.... I tore off the embarassing D&G fake tag.  It only took 2 seconds and I felt chic again.

Soho

Ohh Soho, the ever so chic Soho... how would I best describe it?  Back in the days when I was still in college, merely whispering the word would bring a gleam to my eye.  Not so much these days... "touristy" is how I would describe it now.  Soho still has the fabulous stores.  Chanel, Marni, Intermix, Miu Miu, Prada (with the famous changing rooms and staircase), D&G, to a name a few.  But now with the exchange rate, the streets are crowded with Europeans hunting for a bargain.  Will you still spot the occasional celebrity or model? Yes, but the stylish new yorkers that used to strut their stuff down Broadway are no longer there.  I am about talking the new yorkers whose styles truly are unique, those that don't follow fashion trends, the ones that really take your breath away.  I would suggest Nolita or West Village.  Maybe you might find some there.

BTW, during what time is there no sales tax on clothing purchases in the New York/Boston area? I seem to recall that it's during the winter time right?
