Day 1 - Sunday May 11, 2008

A Different Side of S.F.

I had some friends visiting from out of town.  They love Thai food so I had to take them to Osha Thai.  Sure, it's contemporary Thai food and not the most authentic, but it's so good it doesn't even matter.  Have the Volcanic Beef here because it melts in your mouth.  And you'll wonder why every onion ring prior was such a bore.  The lychee iced tea is also a winner.

At the Embarcadero, the Vaillancourt Fountain is a nice place to hang out.

We blew bubbles and watched kids run around the tiles in the fountain.  It was a beautiful day to walk around the Embarcadero.  We walked along the piers and stumbled upon an exact replica of the Nina.

The Nina doesn't looks so nina here.

Levi's Plaza Park

We walked our way over to Levi's Plaza Park.  I felt like a little kid.  It was so much fun.  Definitely the highlight of the day.  We had a lot of adrenaline pumping and decided the touristy day should not end there.  We walked through Chinatown and passed by Golden Gate Bakery and its huge line per usual.

The egg custard tarts are the thing to get at here.

Transamerica Pyramid

Transamerica Redwood Park

The Transamerica Pyramid is a landmark, but not too many people know about the redwood park.  It's dedicated to the people who work at said pyramid.  It's very tiny, but it's there.

The final stop with this particular group was Old St. Mary's Square.  There's a fun swing set there.  I just don't do primary-colored plastic playpen stuff.

I was picked up by a friend outside the gate of Chinatown.  We went to Mas Sake for dinner.  They have some very inventive rolls there.  I've decided that mango and sushi do go together.  I hate mangoes with a passion, but I can appreciate what it brings out of the tuna.

Tourist festivities continued!  Went to Pier 39 for some old-fashioned mini donuts.  Much better than a box of Entemann's from Safeway.  We watched some woman performing stunts, but she wasn't all that entertaining.  The sea lions are always fun to watch though.  Many an out-of-towner has dragged me to Pier 39, but I didn't know about the sea lions until fairly recently.  It was a long day filled with fun and FREE touristy activities.

How cute are they?!
